To be in a state of change can cause a little havoc in one’s life, and for anyone around them. It creates new and sometimes very interesting circumstances for both of them. The person involved in the change is proud of their new ability or trait, the person dealing with them is just confused, they don’t know who this person is. Both involved need to be understanding of the other. Change is not a solitary thing; it does not just affect you. It effects all who come in contact with you and even some who do not.

Change is the pebble dropped in the water; the ripples will affect everything it comes in contact with, the change in you is also change in others. It must be, or it cannot be authentic change.

Now some may say, “How does me not swearing anymore affect others I do not meet. I understand how affect my family and friends, but people I don’t even know, come on Paul, I think you are losing it.” Well you may be correct about me losing it, but change does affect others, I would say everyone. By you not using foul language, your family will see this, and in return will use it less, at least around you. It’s the peer pressure thing working in a positive way. If they swear less around you and they have friends around, the friends will hear them cussing less, and the affect goes on and on….

So your simple change will affect the world, maybe in a small way, but it will affect it. And sometimes the small ways are the best of ways.

So try to understand that others around you are affect directly by you choosing to change, choosing to grow, and in a way, you will cause change and growth in them.

Keep growing and changing, creating a better you knowing that you are also helping to create a better world, one small change at a time.

Life lessens learned…

This statement should follow everything we do, we are always in a passion to learn from what we have done, be it a successes or a failure.

Our minds have the ability to grow, to never stop learning, but all too often we do not take advantage of that. We allow ourselves to fall in to comfortable places, to be satisfied with what we have, and do not push ourselves to learn all we can.

Learning to takes time and energy, and we do not seem to want to use up out time to learn, all too often we have very little energy to spare. But it is an essential part of life; we are created to learn, created to grow. We become restless when we are idol, when we stagnate to lone we yearn for change, for movement for growth.

Life is one big lesson, if we allow it to be, we have to see each moment as an opportunity to grow, to learn to become a better person. It matters not if the moment was good or bad, what matters is what we take from that moment, what we learn from it.

Use each moment as a life lesson, grow from it, and become the person you are created to be. Do not stand still, but always walk through life, allowing each moment to further your growth, allowing each second to be an opportunity to learn.

Life is an adventure, life is an opportunity to grow, allow it to happen, and see what becomes of you.

Extreme #1: Is change always a good thing, must I always be growing?

Extreme #2: I stop growing, and I’m dead, change is a constant.

I reality there are really two types of people in the world, ones the are always on the move, and ones that are always standing still, yes I know that people fall between the 2 extremes, but for this blog I need to look at the extremes, because in someway we are one or the other.

The extremes are how most of us describe ourselves, me I am a #2 extreme, my sister; she would be a #1. Me I see change and growth as exciting and challenging, my sister, she see change as bother, and somewhat scary, me, well I like the unknown, its makes life, well, worth living.

Now to be honest, I am not always growing, unless you consider my waist size… And my sister is not always standing still, once again what I am talking about are the extremes, the label that would best describe myself. In truth I would fall somewhere near it, but not dead on it. If we where to say Extreme #1 was a value of 1 and Extreme #2 was a value of 10, I would be an 8 and my sister would be a 2.

We can create extremes for most any aspect of our life, any defining attribute, such as Liberal or Conservative, Me I am a conservative as is my sister, but she is more extreme then I am, but we both are conservative, where as my friend is a liberal, but not as extreme as some. If I where to rate them, with Liberal being 1 and Conservative being 10, I would be an 8, my sister would be a 9 and my friend would be a 4.

Why am I doing this, what point am I trying to make, what lesson am I teaching…

We need to define ourselves, and in order to do that, we need to know where we stand, and where we want to go, and the labels in life help us do that, gives us standards to base it all on.

We may not like the label, but if we are honest with ourselves they will serve us well.

So go ahead and label yourself, and rate yourself, based on the 2 extremes, be honest and you will learn who you are, and have a better idea of where you want to go.

Here are some examples of extremes:

Parent à Friend

Liberal à Conservative

Dynamic à Static

Introvert à Extravert

You can do it with any extreme, but you have to take a good hard look at yourself, and be honest, even if it hurts.

Start a journal of extreme ratings, one a month choose one of the extremes and rate yourself, have a friend or family member rate you, then use the month to try to change the extreme, set a goal and chart a path, journal about it and watch the changes happen. At the end of the month reevaluate yourself, and the same friend or family member do the same, and chart it in your journal.

Change is always happening, the only condition that in never constant is our involvement in the change. So become active in the process, and growth will follow.

Why do we quest for betterment of our selves, what makes us want to be new and improved? I believe it is part of our makeup our DNA.

We really don’t have much of a choice, we are created to be the best “self” we can be. Yet some choose to suppress this tendency, or to mask it with sex, drugs and other addictions, but in the end, the quest for a better self is still there.

Self Help is nothing new, it has been part of the human life from the very beginning. To use the story of Adam and Eve from the book of Genesis, Eve was told that if she ate of the fruit from the tree of knowledge, she would be a better self, she would be like God.

What we have here is the story of the first self help seminar, all-be-it a bad one, but it was the first one. And Eve bought in to it; she wanted to be the best Eve she could be, as did Adam, who also ate of the fruit.

If it was not for our quest for betterment, we would still be living in caves, drawing on rock, and pulling woman around by there hair. Self Help is just another word or phrase for seeking the truth; we are all looking for the true self, the authentic self, the one that God created, but because of our fallen nature, we have lost.

The problem is, like Adam and Eve; we all want the easy way to the new and improved self. We all want the magic pill, or the book to read that will transform us over night in to the new and improved self. But as we have learned, from the lesson of Adam and Eve, that is not the best way to go about it.

It has taken the human race millions of years, just to get to this point, and look around you, in some ways we are still cavemen pulling our woman around by the hair. Change is a slow process, one that takes time, there is not over night change, there is no magic pill we can take.

But what we do have is time, not lots of it, but we do have it. As a collective of humans, we will change only when we as individuals change. Each of us is part of the over all change in humanity, and that change comes slow, but it does come. The problem is that we like over night success stories. Why do you think shows like American Idol so popular, we like to see people become the best self they can in a few easy steps.

Once again I refer you back to Adam and Eve, and remind you that it don’t work that way. Even on American Idol it is not overnight nor is it easy. But the producers of the show make it seem that way. Why? Because it sells to our basic instinct of the best self we all want to be.

Change is not easy, and it’s not quick. But it is attainable. Once again lets look back to a bible story, not Adam and Eve this time, but lets look at Jesus, the son of God, and the son of the human Mary.

Jesus was born a human, just like you and me. And as a human, he had all the makings of a human; he was in just like us in all ways except sin. But Jesus as a child was not the Jesus we read about in the Gospels. In-fact the bible tells us so; it states that Jesus grew in to his knowledge and understanding. That is a very human act. It took Jesus 30 years to start his ministry. Jesus even grew during his 3 year ministry; once again the bible tells us so, but you will have to read it for yourself, I don’t want to spoil the plot for you. The jest of the story was Jesus did not think at first he came to save anyone except the Jews, but then he grew and changed his point of view.

We all are on a path to become the best self we can be, and like Adam and Eve, sometimes we will fail, and like Jesus we will grow in to our self, slowly and even when we think we are new and improved, we will continue to grow even more.

So really, we are all a bit like Adam and Eve, and a bit like Jesus. We sometimes fail and we sometimes succeed. But in the end, we all are seeking the true self, the one that we where created to be.

We all have dreams, some big and some small, but they are dreams just the same.  Sometimes our dreams are realistic and some are not, but they are still dreams.

Dreaming is a part of life; we need them to survive, to grow, and to prosper. If we had no dreams, we would have no electricity, or cars; or much of anything else. We need them to challenge us and to help us grow.

I have a dream, one of the best know speeches ever given, and it was a great and grand dream, one the helped a nation to grow, and is still feeding the nation, and challenging the nation in to greater things. But the dream had to be there first, the dream has to stir the nation’s conciseness and excite the minds of all, the dream had to add new colors to the nations fabric, adding vibrancy to cloth of America, but it had to be a dream first, a dream in one persons mind.

I to have dreams, ambitions and callings, some to greatness, others to mediocrity, but dreams all the same, some of them have taken root in my being, others have flown off on there own, and yet some never seem to start, they just float in the pool of the mind, waiting for what I do not know, but they are there.

It is the essence of dreaming that makes us who we are; it is the ability to create, in our minds, that allows us to create in the world. It is the dream that allows us to be all that we are created to be.

Dreams are important to who we are, they define us, and help to create us, and the world around us. They are the essence of who we are.

We need to keep dreaming, big and small, we need to keep reaching for that moon beam, we need to lift ourselves up high, and call others to us. We need to allow the dream to penetrate us, deep in our core, allow it to motivate and move us. Allow it to rework our hearts, minds and soul. We need to allow the dream to color our life with fantastic vibrant colors, to shine for all to see.

I have a dream is a powerful statement, one that has changed our world, and colored existence for the better, but the dream can not stop there, it must be carried on. We must add to this fabric of life our own thread, our own pattern and colors. We must create a patchwork of dreams that will dazzle and stun all who see it. We must live life full of colors full of dreams.

We are here on this earth to create a quilt, and each square, each thread and color must be defined by each and every one of us, and each square must be unique and personal, but shared by all.

So dream big or dream small, the size of the dream doesn’t matter, just dream; Add your pattern to the quilt of life, add your colors and stitch and help make this world a better place.

Start today, and create a reality we all can prosper and live in.
